Lecture by Cas Mudde followed by a Q&A session
In recent years, far-right movements, parties and politicians have gained significant ground – not only in Europe, – but also in the United States. New forms of mobilization, the strategic use and even ownership of digital platforms and the disruption of democratic institutions and norms are increasingly challenging liberal democracies.
In this event, we will talk to Cas Mudde – an internationally renowned political scientist and one of the leading experts on populism and the far right – about the evolution of the far right in the US in the Trump era. How has the American right restructured itself? What is the role of political movements, media platforms, think tanks and grassroots networks? And in what ways has Donald Trump acted as a catalyst for the radicalization of mainstream conservatism?
Looking beyond the US, we will explore potential democratic counter-strategies – in politics, media and civil society – and ask: what lessons can Europe learn from the American experience?
